Public Notice : 25th Anniversary of the Designs Act, 2000
“Designs – Celebration of Aesthetic Creations”
The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM), under the
Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, is pleased to announce the commencement of celebrations marking the
25th anniversary of the enactment of the Designs Act, 2000, under the theme:
“Designs – Celebration of Aesthetic Creations”, beginning 25th May 2025.
This landmark occasion highlights the significance of industrial design as a vital component of intellectual property rights, contributing substantially to economic development, particularly within the
Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Start-up sectors.
A Journey of Innovation and Progress
Since its enactment on 25th May 2000, the Designs Act, 2000 has played a pivotal role in safeguarding the aesthetic creativity of designers and promoting innovation. Key achievements include:
- Adoption of global novelty standards in design assessment.
- India’s accession to the Locarno Agreement for International Classification of Industrial Designs (2019).
- Inclusion of MSMEs (2014) and Start-ups (2021) with
reduced application fees.
- Signing of the Design Law Treaty (DLT) at Riyadh in 2024.
- Comprehensive digital transformation of the design registration process.
- Availability of online tools such as E-Register of Designs and real-time application tracking.
Invitation to Stakeholders
To commemorate this significant milestone, CGPDTM will host a series of events and outreach initiatives to celebrate and raise awareness about the Indian design ecosystem. Stakeholders, including design professionals, innovators, MSMEs, Start-ups, and the
general public, are cordially invited to participate in the celebrations.
